At a recent meeting with the widows of the congregation, one of them asked us what they were expected to give—are they considered a family or an individual? When the budget for the year is distributed, there is an amount posted of funds needed per individual. That figure is a guideline of what it takes for our church to meet its financial obligations for the year. However, that amount is far more than some individuals can give and far less than others can give. We look to scripture for advice about giving, and it is very clear that a giving believer is a blessed believer! The concept is reiterated throughout both the Old and New Testaments that God expects us to give as He has blessed us and we in turn can expect continued blessing—even blessing far beyond our wildest imagination!
II Corinthians 9: 6-8 says: “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly well also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” As deacons, it is our prayer that each of us experiences the faith growth it takes to look at our personal and/or family budget and be honest with God in our giving. And it is our joy to know that the blessing will be there!
This week we were thrilled to receive a large donation for Kara and Sosthene from a Lutheran congregation in Laurel who has learned of their work. That church has a member who has spent time in the Central African Republic and wants to participate in their work. How amazing our God is!
We encourage each of you to consider the ongoing work within the church, these in particular: Kara and Sosthene, Celebrate Recovery (Lord’s Supper offerings), and the expenses related to the pastor search. We thank you for your generous and faithful giving and ask you to be aware of the causes which the offerings are scheduled. If you need a list of the offerings to post in your home, let one of the deacons know.
